Many people lack confidence due to halitosis (bad breath). This can be caused by a number of factors; strong foods such as garlic and onions; smoking; a dry mouth; certain medical conditions; medicine that result in a dry mouth; bacteria that accumulates on the tongue and gum disease.
A patient came to Time Dental saying that she was suffering from bad breath. She was a 20 /day cigarette smoker and said she had always been told that her teeth would fall out by middle age. She was now at middle age and still had her teeth in place. However on asessing her mouth and taking xrays she had quite advanced gum disease meaning that the supporting bone around her teeth had reduced resulting in periodontal pockets. This had caused her teeth to become mobile and the end result would be that they would fall out. The bad breath was caused not just due to the smoking but also the gum disease and the bacteria on her tongue.
To help her with this problem the first step was to start a quit smoking programme, and periodontal therapy sessions. Gum disease is a reversible preventable disease in the early stages. Commonly known as gingivitis. This is the inflammation of the gums. Effective brushing and interdental cleaning will prevent this from progressing. In the later stages of gum disease bacteria invades the space between the gum and the tooth. It then destroys the supporting bone around the tooth resulting in periodontal pockets. The bone loss can be so destructive that the teeth eventually become mobile and loose. Patients with periodontal pockets can suffer from bad breath, bleeding gums, abscesses and it can even affect your general health if not kept in a good condition. There is also a link between gum disease and heart disease.
Regular dental health assessments with your dentist and hygienist can help to give you preventative advice and catch things early before its too late.
