Top tips- how you can prevent acid erosion of your teeth…

acid erosion and how to prevent it from Time Dental

So we already discussed what acid erosion is and what can cause it, Here are some top tips to help prevent acid erosion from happening in the first place:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day with a small headed toothbrush and a fluoride toothpaste
  • Have a piece of cheese or some milk to help neutralize the acid
  • reduce the number of acid attacks by eating acid products and fizzy drinks only at meal times
  • Either drink acid/fizzy/sparkly drinks quickly without “swishing” around the mouth or better still drink through a straw to help drinks go to the back of the mouth
  • Give your teeth a chance to remineralise by waiting at least one hour after having something acidic before brushing your teeth.

Remember anything fizzy/ sparkling can be acidic- that includes sparkling mineral water soda water and berocca.

In many cases using preventative techniques and regular dental health checks will reduce acid erosion however in some cases it is important that the tooth and the exposed dentine is protected. This is often achieved by composite bonding by your dentist. This will cover the exposed area of tooth which reduces the risk of further erosion, dental decay and sensitivity.
