The press recently reported that a study carried out in the West Midlands raised a concern about the validity of water fluoridation as a safe public health measure. The study indicated that people in a water fluoridated area scheme were 30% more likely to have hypothyroidism in areas where the fluoride levels were more than 0.3ppm.
The debate as to whether additional fluoride should be added to water is a furious one. Fluoride naturally occurs in water. It is used in mouthwashes and toothpaste and it’s use is an excellent prevention for dental decay. There have been many studies carried out that have proven the benefits of fluoride. The current studies are based on scientific fact for the benefits of fluoride and one must apply extreme caution when reading articles in the newspapers based on one single study.
