Headaches caused by teeth grinding… Time Dental, Farnham

Teeth grinding at Time Dental in Farnham, Surrey

Bruxism is the term for teeth clenching or grinding. There is a huge percentage of the population that do it.

Signs for bruxing include tooth wear on the edges; notches forming up by the gumline of the teeth; hypersensitive teeth; teeth breaking; cheek biting; indentations of the tongue called scalloping; loose teeth; pain at the jaw joint; painful chewing muscles; restricted mouth opening; clicking of the jaw joint; headaches and migraines.

It can be triggered by many things: evidence suggests that it is related to the central nervous system; psychosocial factors; genetic factors; medications; occlusal factors; other medical problems such as Huntingdons disease, Parkinsons, cerebral palsy.

Most people who are bruxers often have no pain, however may notice that their front teeth are uneven or sharp. Have a look at the picture above. This patient was a night and day bruxer but also had alot of dental erosion from coca-cola drinking which would accelerate the wear. Take a close look at the edges of his upper and lower front teeth. Notice how uneven they are.

Come back to our blog soon to see how to deal with bruxing.
