High street coffee shops have been reported to sell drinks with extraordinary levels of sugar. Starbucks was revealed to be selling one drink with 25 teaspoons of sugar! (the venti Grape with Chai, Orange and Cinnamon hot mulled fruit)
It’s thought that 20% of the population visit a coffee shop on a daily basis, but most customers will be unaware of the hidden sugar they are consuming in flavoured drinks.
The adult recommended daily intake is 7 teaspoons of free sugars. A FREE sugar is any sugar that is added to foods by the manufacturer, plus those naturally present in syrups and fruit juices.
A third of hot drinks tested contain the same amount or more than Coca Cola, which has 9 teaspoons of sugar per can.
So what can you do? Here are some tips:
1. Have these types of drinks as occasional treats. Not on a daily basis.
2. Have the tea or coffee without any added flavours or syrups.
3. Try Green tea. It has lots of health benefits and can reduce the bacteria in the mouth.
4.Try a small cup rather than the large ones.
