Is an electric tooth brush really better than a manual one?

electric toothbrush vs manual report from Time Dental n Farnham

I personally think a manual is not as good as an electric one.

The technique for using a manual tooth brush is actually quite tiring for the hand and wrist when doing it properly. Small round circular motions around the teeth and gums can be difficult. Most adult toothbrushes are also too big. Many people think that the bigger the tooth brush the better. In fact the opposite is true. The smaller the head of the toothbrush the better angle you can get around your teeth.

If you still want to stick to a manual toothbrush, ask your dentist or hygienist to show you the technique to use. When using a manual tooth brush people often use a scrubbing technique and this can result in gum recession and tooth wear around the gum area of the teeth which can cause sensitivity. Also use a medium to soft bristled tooth brush. Many people make the mistake of using a hard bristled brush because they think it will clean their teeth more efficiently- it wont, you’ll just wear through your teeth!

There are many different types of electric tooth brushes, but before we get onto that I want to touch on battery operated tooth brushes- don’t bother with them. Personally I don’t think they’re as efficient as electric brushes that you charge up from a plug point.

Electric tooth brushes either have a mechanical rotating action or use ultrasonic vibrations. The 2 leading brands are Oral B with a rotating action and Philips Sonicare with ultrasonic vibrations. I think both types are excellent although they work in different ways. The main point to take home is the technique for using these types of toothbrush.

Holding the brush by the gum line of each tooth for 2-3 seconds at a 45 degree angle. You should be brushing your teeth for about 2-3 mins. Don’t use a scrubbing action on the teeth as this will be too much force and your gums may receed- just hold the brush on each tooth. I would say that electric toothbrushes are much more efficient at keeping your teeth and gums healthy.
