Many people are unaware of the fact that potentially healthy foods can actually permanently damage your teeth in the long term.
Many of our patients don’t know of the effect of drinking concentrated orange juice and how it can affect the enamel of your teeth. You may know that orange juice has lots of Vitamin C in it, but did you know that it is very acidic? If you drink orange juice excessively it can erode your teeth. The process that destroys the teeth is called acid erosion. Which has the effect of wearing through the hard enamel layer of your teeth making them susceptible to sensitivity, decay, discolouration and pain.
Often people will drink orange juice in the morning and brush their teeth straight after. You should NEVER do this. What you are essentially doing is brushing acid into your teeth! If you do this it will accelerate the acid erosion of the teeth enamel.
You should make sure you have your regular dental health checks. At Time Dental we also assess your dietary lifestyle to help you make the right choices.
There are a few other things you can do to prevent the problem of acid erosion from drinking orange juice. You can get into the habit of drinking the juice through a straw. This will bypass your teeth and reduce the erosion effect. You can swish a mouth full of water after drinking the juice to help wash away the acid. You can also delay brushing your teeth after having the drink for at least 30 minutes. This gives your mouth the time to settle back to a neutral pH which is then safe to brush.
