This patient had previous orthodontic treatment as a teenager and her teeth relapsed back to being crooked because she didn’t wear her retainers. She didn’t like the way her teeth were wonky and wanted the fastest option to get them straight again.
We discussed her different options which were fixed orthodontic brackets or clear aligners. Although the clear aligners were the most discreet option, she chose the clear fixed brackets as they worked much faster.
The reason why we could achieve her results faster with fixed brackets is because brackets generally have more control over tooth movement and so they can achieve complex movements in a speedier way. Aligners need to be changed every two weeks in order to incrementally move the teeth. Therefore each aligner is limited in the amount of tooth movement it can produce which is why it can often take longer to get to the end result.
To stop her teeth from relapsing again she needed retainers to be worn for life. There are two types of retainers: fixed bonded retainers and removable retainers. Sometimes we provide both types to be doubly sure that teeth will not drift after completing treatment.
