Tooth decay: your definitive guide

Ok, so a recap for you on your definitive guide to preventing tooth decay. We know that 3 main factors need to be in place to cause tooth decay and that’s decay causing bacteria, fermentable carbohydrates and time. We’ve covered in depth how to reduce the decay causing bacteria in your mouth, so now we are looking at the carbohydrates and time.

Decay is more likely to occur when the bacteria can feed on fermentable carbohydrates and the frequency that the carbohydrates are available in a day.

So if you have sugar with your tea or coffee and you drink between 3-10 cups per day, or you snack between your main meals on digestive biscuits, chocolate, sweets, coca cola, dried fruit, LOTS of strawberries, blackberries etc. You are much more likely to suffer from tooth decay. It’s ok to eat sweet things but in moderation.

If you need to snack there are so many healthy alternatives that will fill your hunger pangs. I did a quick search on the internet and the options are endless. It’s a case of making small changes to your dietary habits that will have a huge impact not only on your dental health but also your general health.

As we approach Christmas there’s always the risk over indulgence of food and drink at parties and when meeting up with friends and family. You know what? Christmas is a special time of year so enjoy it. If you can use some of the tips and tricks that we’ve discussed in this series to keep your smile healthy then that will help you throughout the rest of the year.

Merry Christmas from the Time Dental Team.

PS. If you fancy getting into the Christmas festivities, why not come to the Christmas Carol service hosted by Jubilee Church? It’s being held at Weydon School this Sunday 14th December at 6:30 pm. It will be amazing.
