What is periodontal therapy?

Periodontal therapy is used to control active gum disease and keep your teeth and gums in good condition. It goes beyond standard hygiene treatment, with advanced techniques and state-of-the-art equipment to clean both below and above the gum line.

Periodontal disease is the progressive and more severe form of gum disease. It can’t be cured or reversed, but we are able to help you control it and prevent it from getting worse. When plaque build ups on your teeth are not successfully removed, it can lead to receding gums, wobbly teeth and even tooth loss. Periodontal therapy at Time Dental combines effective treatment in our practice with bespoke advice for your oral hygiene routine at home to bring you the best results.

What does the periodontal therapy process involve?

During your routine dental appointments, your dentist and hygienist keep an eye on your teeth and gums, looking for signs of gum disease. If any problem areas or issues are identified that need further attention, we arrange an appointment with our specialist periodontist for you.

To begin, our periodontist further examines your teeth and gums, noting the areas that treatment needs to be focused on. The periodontal options available for your case are discussed in detail with you, along with some tips and advice for maintaining your oral health at home.

We use state-of-the-art technology and techniques to help get your periodontal disease under control and able to be managed. This could include cleaning beneath the gum line, using local anaesthetic to ensure your comfort throughout. Periodontal therapy usually takes place over several appointments.

Frequently asked questions

What is the early stage of gum disease?

The early stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. This occurs when plaque and bacteria is not cleaned away from your teeth effectively, and is allowed to harden into calculus. Signs of the early stage of gum disease include shiny, swollen and inflamed gums which bleed when brushed. Gingivitis can be reversed with excellent oral hygiene and careful treatment.

Can gum disease be cured?

The early stage of gum disease can be cured with the right hygiene care, both at home and in the practice. Once the build up of plaque and bacteria has been removed, your gums return to their healthy state. If your gum disease has advanced into periodontitis, this can’t be cured but can be managed.

Can you live a long life with periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease is not life-threatening, and you can live a long life with the condition, provided it is managed and treated well. If left untreated, periodontal disease could lead to further oral and general health issues down the line, so it is important to keep it under control.

Will I lose my teeth if I have periodontal disease?

If it is not managed with proper treatment, periodontal disease can cause your gums to recede and the support structures around your teeth to begin to fail. This can lead to your teeth becoming wobbly and loose, and they may even fall out. We can help you control your periodontal disease to help avoid this.

Can your gums recover from periodontitis?

Once your gums have become damaged due to periodontitis, and started to recede, they cannot grow back. We can provide gum grafts or lengthening to help improve the appearance of your teeth and gums once periodontal treatment has enhanced their health.

Does periodontal treatment hurt?

We use local anaesthetic for all periodontal treatment, making the area in your mouth completely numb. You won’t be able to feel any pain during treatment.
